Start your day with a visit to Mtskheta, one of the oldest cities in Georgia and a UNESCO World Heritage site. As the ancient capital of Georgia, Mtskheta is considered the spiritual heart of the country. It was the center of political, cultural, and religious life for centuries, and many important historical events took place here.
Visit the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, which dates back to the 11th century and is considered one of Georgia's holiest sites. It is said to be the burial place of Christ’s robe and has been a pilgrimage site for centuries. The cathedral is an impressive example of Georgian medieval architecture and is adorned with beautiful frescoes and intricate stone carvings.
Continue to the Jvari Monastery, located on a hill overlooking the town. The monastery, built in the 6th century, is famous for its stunning location and its historical significance in the early spread of Christianity in Georgia. It was here that King Mirian of Iberia (the ancient Georgian kingdom) was baptized in the 4th century, marking the official conversion of Georgia to Christianity.
Next, visit the Samtavro Monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Nino, the Christian missionary who played a key role in Georgia's conversion to Christianity. Located at the edge of the town, Samtavro is known for its serene atmosphere and ancient significance.
The monastery complex includes a church, a bell tower, and several smaller chapels. The church itself was originally built in the 4th century, though much of it has been rebuilt and restored over time. Inside, you can find impressive frescoes, including depictions of Saint Nino, as well as an ancient tomb where it is believed that Saint Nino’s relics were kept.
