Description
The Lakshminarayan Temple, widely known as Birla Mandir, is one of Delhi’s largest and most important Hindu temples. Dedicated to Shri Lakshminarayan (Vishnu with his consort Lakshmi), the temple was constructed by the Birla family from 1933 to 1939 and inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. Spread over 6.27 acres, the temple complex features several side shrines honoring deities like Shiva, Durga, Krishna, Hanuman, Ganesh, and the Shiv Parivar, as well as unique spaces such as the Sheesh Mahal and Geeta Bhawan for spiritual discourses.
The temple’s foundation stone was laid by Maharaja Udaybhan Singh, with the concluding yagna performed by Swami Keshavanandji. Adorned with fountains, gardens, and nationalistic sculptures, Birla Mandir attracts millions of devotees, especially during major Hindu festivals like Janmashtami and Diwali. Open to all without discrimination, the temple is believed to bring blessings to those who pray here for 14 days or perform rituals in its yagshala, and is even considered auspicious for matchmaking meetings.
