Description
Explore the historical sites of southern Georgia on a day trip from Tbilisi. Visit the cave monastery complex of Vardzia, the medieval fortress of Rabati, the resort town of Borjomi, and the ancient fortress of Tmogvi.
Begin your journey with a visit to Vardzia, a cave monastery complex dating back to the 12th–13th centuries. Carved into the sheer tuff-breccia cliff of the Erusheti Ridge, the complex stretches for more than 500 meters and consists of 13 levels. Explore the monastery's 120 residential chambers and 420 utility rooms, and admire the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin, the main temple of Vardzia.
Next, head to Rabati, a medieval fortress built in the 9th century in the city of Akhaltsikhe. Divided into two parts, the fortress features a lower modern section with shops, cafés, restaurants, and a hotel, and an upper historical section containing the Ahmediye Mosque, an Orthodox church, the Jakeli Palace, and a History Museum.
Continue to Borjomi, a resort town in the Borjomi Gorge, famous for its mineral water.
Finally, visit the Tmogvi Canyon, situated on the left bank of the Kura River. Take nice memorable pictures.
