Fishing & Sailing in Delhi

Fishing and sailing might not be the first things you think of when someone mentions Delhi, but if you know where to look, there’s a surprising side to the city’s outdoors. Most people head to the Yamuna, especially near Wazirabad or near the Okhla Bird Sanctuary, where local anglers spend quiet mornings hoping for catfish or rohu. It’s low-key, nothing fancy like oceanside marinas, but there’s a real, peaceful vibe if you bring your gear and some patience.

Sailing options are a bit more niche. The Okhla Barrage area does have some small boating clubs where you can find a kayak or a tiny sailboat, especially on weekends when the air finally cools off after those brutal Delhi summers. It’s not like the sea, obviously, but quite refreshing to be on the water. My tip? Go early morning because wind conditions tend to be better then, and the heat is bearable.

If you want to fish in some slightly more ‘official’ waters, the Surajkund area just south of Delhi is known for fishing ponds, though it’s more of a relaxing catch-and-release scene. Bring snacks, a good hat, and enjoy the break from the city noise,you won’t regret it.
